Trev Davis – Heaven (2021)
If you are looking for a single that combines emo angst, melodic songwriting and a touch of the 80s, Trev Davis has your back. With this single ‘Heaven’, he dips into nostalgic sounds before delivering a crisp synth-pop edge. Complete with bittersweet lyrics, he showcases his versatility with his second release which is an amazing follow-up to his debut.
Continuing to draw on experience in hardcore and pop-punk bands, he has you slipping into nostalgic sadness. While he has been in bands and worked as a touring music photographer, Davis spent the summer of 2020 recording as a solo artist. With help from producer and engineer Desmo, he is unleashing his angst-ridden sound on the world.
The light synths that open ‘Heaven’ make you think of music straight out of the 80s. The opening melodic line could easily be in an old coming of age movie before it takes a more modern turn. The tapping beats are all modern vibes while the delicate synths continue their retro hit. Everything combines perfectly through the melody, but there is this extra edge added on the chorus. The layers of the melody are interesting as they play a modern emo vibe against the bittersweetness of 80s synth-pop.
The blending of the melody is enhanced by Davis’ vocals. His voice has this hook hidden in it that catches your heart and tugs. There is a pained feeling to his performance that fills you with a bone-deep sadness. On the chorus, the depths of his sadness breaks for a moment of brightness and hope. Later in the track, his performance has a light electronic edge added giving it a more expansive feeling before his pained calls slide out into the soundscape. The lyrics have a timeless feeling to them that matches both the modern edge of the track and the retro flows.
Trev Davis melds 80s vibes with a modern sensibility for the pain-filled single ‘Heaven’. The combination of retro synths with modern beats is artfully executed while being enhanced by the timeless feeling of the lyrics. His vocals bring a hit of bittersweet emotion as he works through a battle of angst and hope.
