Trash Pals – Dust It Off (2024)

With an optimistic attitude and positive glow, US-based duo Trash Pals always find the bright side to life’s gritty existence. In the track ‘Sonya’, they dipped into the metaphysical connection between human consciousness and music; and in the track ‘Perfect Dream’, the pair touched on feelings of warmth, resolve and intimacy threading aspirations with reality’s difficulties. So, just based on these two singles, Conor Rayne (vocals, bass and drums) and Gabriel Schnider (vocals, guitar and keyboards) are philosophical, musical and that little bright light peeking up to say, “It’s not all that bad”. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Dust It Off’.

Following the well-received track ‘Sonya’, ‘Dust It Off’ shifts from the smooth indie-folk ballad to a heavier, hard-hitting punch of indie-rock. Recorded at Music Matters and produced in collaboration with Jon Graber, ‘Dust It Off’ is a nostalgic drag to 90s rock with Weezer and Wheatus flipping in the single. Interestingly, while this comparison can be made, Trash Pals have a kaleidoscopic sonic tapestry that is distinctly Trash Pals… and will probably influence other artists very soon, if not already.

Short and sweet, ‘Dust It Off’ comes in at two minutes; two minutes of crashing drums, bold guitars and smooth vocals. One aspect I find intriguing is how there is a smooth maturity to the production but gruffness like dust layered on a shimmering gemstone. Burning brightly from beneath, Trash Pals’ hopeful positivity gives off an empowering shine; however, the dust lingers brushing a layer of challenges across the vulnerable tune. The thing is, you need to wipe it aside and carry on carrying on. Trash Pals explain:

“’Dust It Off’ is a song about being okay with the inevitable truth that sometimes life will knock you off your feet and drag you down the street; the question is whether or not you will get back up and give it another shot… Losing will happen and not everything can be a win, but it’s the ability to get up and keep pushing that truly matters… while the process is the goal, it will certainly be messy, embarrassing, and make you feel a little stupid sometimes, but all of that is okay – just dust it off and keep going!”
