Tragically Unknown – In Between (2022)

Influenced by the likes of The Cranberries and Paramore, Icelandic band Tragically Unknown find that balance between pop-punk and alternative rock. Formed in late 2021, the trio could be considered relative newbies on the scene; however, they are making waves in the indie world with their well-received singles. Featured in Music Arena GH, Dead Good Music, and numerous Icelandic radio stations, Tragically Unknown is slowly becoming more known. The latest addition to their discography is ‘In Between’.

Following their debut single ‘Villain Origin Story’, Tragically Unknown hypnotises audiences with their track ‘In Between’. As with their debut song, there is a haunting haziness reminiscent of The Cranberries; however, this does not mean the band are a one-trick pony. Darker and harder than ‘Villain Origin Story’, the sophomore single brings a strong alternative rock flavour to the melodic arrangement. Pounding drums match dynamic guitars in the hard-hitting melody. Interestingly enough, the band takes you on a journey with movements from bold rock crescendos to softer textures in the verses. Vocalist Helena Hafsteinsdóttir’s dulcet tones retain its silky smoothness throughout enhancing the otherworldliness of the single.

While the melody can have you holding your breath, it is the lyricism of ‘In Between’ that showcases Tragically Unknown’s depth. Touching on the concept of difficult relationships, ‘In Between’ explores the frustration, anxiety and despair of “being in a relationship with a depressed person that doesn’t want your help.” Energetic and powerful, the ‘In Between’ captures the stirring emotions one can feel in this situation with its bittersweet sentiment.

This is my introduction to Tragically Unknown and, truthfully, I absolutely loved it. I cannot wait for more from this inventive band.
