Track of the Day: Xylaroo – Sweetooth
Blending their natural musical talents, sisters Coco and Holly Chant are creating melodies with charming lyricism and catchy choruses in Xylaroo. Signed by the independent label Sunday Best Records in 2015, the dynamic duo released their debut album, Sweetooth, the following year. Sweetooth was extremely well-received gaining coverage on BB2 Radio, BB 6 Radio, Xfm, God Is In The TV and The Music. This global coverage has pushed Xylaroo’s popularity to an international level building a strong, loyal following.
After their bump into the music industry with the critically acclaimed Sweetooth, Xylaroo progressed with more popular singles including ‘Sweetooth’. Described as the “wilder, younger sister of ‘Track A’ Lackin’ – a single off their debut album”, Sweetooth (the single, not the album) is a tale of desire, heartache and toxic love. Using their narrative style, Coco and Holly Chant intertwine their unique vocals finding the balance between folk-rock and Americana.
While the sisters tend to perform as a two-piece, they choose to collaborate with guitarist Joe Singleton to add that extra something to their melodies. In fact, there are arrangements where the band incorporate with further musicians adding bass and drums. The guitar-led ‘Sweetooth’ showcases their ability to combine simple soulful lyricism with the additional bass and guitar for more flowing, upbeat tracks.
Overall, ‘Sweetooth’ is a high-paced single with a great degree of buoyancy that overpowers the painful lyricism. In fact, the vocals are the element that enhance the cheerfulness of the track increasing the engaging nature of ‘Sweetooth’ and the band altogether. I can’t help but have this track on repeat – and I’m not getting tired of it!
