Track of the Day: Will Spencer – The Real World (2023)

Embracing music early on, singer-songwriter Will Spencer spent much of his life exploring and developing skills as a guitarist and pianist – now, we hear this natural talent for music through soul-stirring melodies. Driven by brutal honesty and raw authenticity, Spencer’s songs are poignant and thought-provoking while retaining a toe-tapping warmth. This is my introduction to the UK-based artist, but he has already received critical acclaim from Send Me Your Ears and Rising Artist Blog, as well as airtime on BBC Introducing Berkshire and Austria’s Fabrique. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘The Real World’.

This first of his “one song per month for a year” campaign, ‘The Real World’ follows Spencer’s well-received singles ‘Words I Wish I’d Said’ and ‘i don’t wanna be here no more’. Primarily an alternative rock meets pop rock artist, Spencer’s previous material captures the heart-breaking depth through bold rock tones. Yet, while ‘The Real World’ retains a rock element, slivers of pop break through the melody with a charming reggae-inspired tone. In other words, you can bop your head along to the soft keyboards while falling into a hard-hitting sonic whirlpool.

I would not call ‘The Real World’ ethereal as such, but the melody has a certain otherworldliness to it. The simplest way to describe ‘The Real World’ is like floating in a pool with your body bobbing along as the water slowly moves you with the tiny ripples. Yet, just as you float, the water sends shivers along your skin in its mystical magic.

Inspired by life in its entirety, Will Spencer explores aspects of self-discovery and awareness of mental health issues through his music. In ‘The Real World’, Spencer melds honest and personal emotions with a vintage pop air. When speaking about ‘The Real World’, he explains that consideration for the song “began in the simplest of moments, admiring the sky on our beautiful planet before quickly morphing into something much bigger: the absolute necessity to seek wonder and beauty in a world that’s all too often complex…”

Sincere, heartfelt, tender and filled with vulnerability, Will Spencer gives us another musical masterpiece with ‘The Real World’.
