Track of the Day: whoskevin? – Going Dark (2023)
Embracing the power of the internet, Dak Holiday, whoskevin? and Jake Anthonyx began as strangers but ended up as collaborators creating something outstanding. Inspired by Linkin Park, Korn, Bring Me The Horizon and Pierce The Veil, the threesome bring a hard-hitting, heavy and genre-bending sound to the masses. Featured on Artisti Online, iHeart Radio and Audio Cult, whoskevin? is turning heads far beyond his North American borders. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Going Dark’.
With numerous collaborations, singer-songwriter, producer and audio engineer whoskevin? is a multi-genre artist with a strong innovative streak. Following the single ‘BAD FOR ME’ (recorded with Dxrkknght), ‘Going Dark’ blends elements of hard rock and nu-metal in a heart-pounding sonic package. A strong leaning toward Linkin Park is heard with slivers of Ashes To New as ‘Going Dark’ incorporates the powerful punk screams with distorted instrumentation and a more mellifluous voice slithering into the arrangement. Interestingly enough, while the track is aggressive and filled with angst, there is a warm, harmonic flow with everything coming together in a melodic, well, melody.
When asked what the single is about, the lads explain that they hope to empower people with ‘Going Dark’. It is an optimistic, hopeful track where you should “go for what you want in life. Don’t let others talk you out of your ambition.” I find this inspiring as one would call it an angry single in its aggression; however, the screams and distorted ferocity also bring a “well, eff you and I’m doing it” tone to the listener. Overall, I just love it!
