Track of the Day: Wagner The Band – Run Away With Me (2024)
An established act in the Austrian alternative rock scene, Wagner The Band is fervently gathering a loyal following. From their debut single ‘Beast Of Joy’ in 2019 to the 2023 ‘XTC’, Rainer Wagner and his crew are quickly turning heads on an international scale. Breaking the realms of musical conventionalism, Wagner The Band weaves together the raw force of musical thread from vintage funk to contemporary rock. Music is magic, transcending space, time and distance – this is blatantly heard when listening to Wagner The Band.
Following their well-received track ‘XTC’, Wagner (vocals), Michael Fink (electric guitar), Michael Mozeth (bass), Andreas Göschl (drums), and Gregor Huber (piano, organ and mellotron) release the single ‘Run Away With Me’. Dragging us back to the days of Earth, Wind and Fire and Kool & The Gang, ‘Run Away With Me’ rushes past your ears with a kaleidoscopic twirl of vintage funk – similar to ‘XTC’ but with a bit more soul woven into the sonic tapestry. This might be the collaboration with soul songstress Helena May, or it might be a greater feeling of funk-rock on that day; either way, the single will have you dancing along with soul in your heart and funk in your feet.
All combined in a harmonic symphony, pounding drums match soaring guitars and a slip of keyboards slices through with its own brand of cheekiness. The vocals, however, really carry the funk-rock vibe and profound lyricism. An interplay between Wagner and May presents the narrative of power, liberation and freedom not only for one individual but for everyone. Wagner explains:
“The lyrics of ‘Run Away With Me’ weave a tale of love and rebellion, urging listeners to break free from societal constraints and embrace a life of passion and freedom… As the narrative unfolds, it reveals a character who is both irresistible and unyielding, embodying a spirit of defiance and adventure. The chorus, with its rallying cry… is a call to action, inviting listeners to cast aside their fears and ambitions. The verses further delve into themes of loyalty and sacrifice… This poignant imagery underscores the depth of commitment and the lengths one would go to for true love and freedom.”
