Track of the Day: Viscula – Dance Cannot Be Killed
Described by Edgar Allan Poets as “pure energy…”, Ukrainian band Viscula oozes hard-hitting enthusiasm. From psychedelia and post-punk to indie-rock and grunge, the talented trio are reputed for their genre-defying innovation. Formed in 2002, the UK-based band have been sharing their music with audiences across the globe performing at various festivals, notable venues and even winning the ‘Best Indie Award’ at the Ukrainian festival Chervona Ruta in 2013.
In honour of their 20th anniversary as a group, the single ‘Dance Cannot Be Killed’ is a tribute to Viscula and their cultural activities as a band. Since their inception they have performed on three continents – Europe, Asia and America – and this song is a representation of their “American period”.
Recorded in 2017 with producer Dan Konopka (OK Go), ‘Dance Cannot Be Killed highlights Viscula’s versatility merging elements of various genres into a melodic arrangement. High-paced and upbeat with a cheery vibe, ‘Dance Cannot Be Killed’ has you dancing from the first second. The lead guitar leads you through a sonic forest in a bright, “sunshiney” way – it’s like rats following the Pied Piper, but this isn’t to your death. Instead, it’s following a shocking light to something greater than you or me – the music.
Yes, the track is guitar-driven with pounding drums in the arrangement; however, it is the vocals that seem to egg you on. Bold, rich and warm, the vocals carry atop the melody constantly hovering like some excited sonic cloud. Rock and roll to the core, but with some indie-rock grittiness, ‘Dance Cannot Be Killed’ is anthemic and can easily be loved by all audiences. This song just proves that dance cannot be killed.
