Track of the Day: Vanderzee – The Coming Day (2023)

Featured on Obscure Sound, Sound Kharma, We Love That, iHeart Radio and various playlists, singer-songwriter Vanderzee is turning heads on an international scale. With only three singles to his name (including the recent ‘The Coming Day’), US-based Vanderzee might be considered a newbie but his uniqueness makes him stand out in the crowd. Difficult to define, Vanderzee is not a one-trick pony and should not be pigeon-holed. From post-punk to indie-pop and hip-hop-influenced electropop, this musician is in a constant state of flux exploring all inches of the musical spectrum. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘The Coming Day’.

Taken from his upcoming album Divergent, ‘The Coming Day’ is a wistful indie-pop song oozing the naïve whimsy of youthful recklessness. A nostalgic breeze of the Beatles is heard in ‘The Coming Day’ building a solid power pop foundation; however, a kick of The Killers adds a heavier indie-rock tone bringing edginess to the song. A combination of pounding drums, powerful guitar and Vanderzee’s rich vocals create that feeling of rebellion and innocent “well, it can wait for tomorrow” sentimentality.

The first single from Divergent, ‘The Coming Day’ introduces us to the childish side of the artist. In totality, the album “oscillates between attitudes of eternal hopefulness with the pressures one puts on oneself to be productive while simultaneously attempting to not put expectations…” – the light and dark side of life with soothing and grittiness in an ironic harmony. ‘The Coming Day’ is the first side of personal reality looking at the less pressured side of life with optimism and hopefulness brightly knocking at the door. Interestingly enough, while there is a joyfulness in the bouncy tune, a vulnerability drips from the vocals making one connect with the spirit of ‘The Coming Day’.
