Track of the Day: Tidal Water – Imperfection (2024)
Some music is merely that: just a song. No rhyme, no reason, just something to have on the radio while you drive home. Then there is music that means something – Tidal Water fall into this category. Intimate, emotional and intricate, Tidal Water uses a complex blend of blues, jazz, funk, punk and rock to tackle societal issues and concerns. Headed by singer-songwriter and producer Martin Hovden, the Norwegian group is quickly gaining critical acclaim across the globe while garnering a loyal international following. With their eclectic genre-diverse sound, there is something for everyone irrespective of decade or style – proof that good music transcends everything. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Imperfection’.
Following their well-received single ‘Corrupted’, ‘Imperfection’ is a taster of Tidal Water’s upcoming album Polarity. Described as an album of depth and complexity with “distinctive character and emotional impact…”, Polarity is a “musical odyssey from introspective ballads to explosive punkish anthems… a tapestry of sound that echoes six decades of musical evolution…”
Produced by Martin Hovden with mixing and mastering by Leif Johansen, ‘Imperfection’ is a sonic hurricane ready to drag you into its chaotic realm. Lost in the dark twirl, Jims Lehner’s drums crash below adding urgency to the track, while Renato Anesi’s bold bass and guitar slice through the dusk with red stripes. Anesi grasps you close with his searing guitar as Markus Matland’s keys glimmer in its psychedelic mist. Yet, while the instruments are soul-stirring within organised insanity, Hovden’s vocals up the ante with profoundness lying in the gruff rap.
Reminding me greatly of Rage Against The Machine, potentially because of Hovden’s vocal similarity to Zack de la Rocha, ‘Imperfection’ roars with potent ferocity and rage but with a distinct harmony in the tune. Tidal Water explains:
“This powerful anthem…dives into punk rock celebrating human flaws and beauty in chaos… ‘Imperfection’ challenges societal norms with its fierce and unapologetic spirit…”
