Track of the Day: The XO – What A Waste

Hailing from Dallas, Texas, The XO is an alternative rock band with some hip-hop vibes in the mix. Having played in separate bands, but with the last group including all three members, Jake Harris (vocals), Andre Casares (bass) and Tanner Vaughn Stephen (guitar) combine their experiences to create a genre-bending sound. Receiving coverage from notable publications like AnR Factory, Talk About Pop Music and Atwood Magazine, The XO is building a loyal following with their unique music. The latest addition to their discography is ‘What A Waste’.

Inspired by the likes of Twenty One Pilots, Joywave and Gorillaz, The XO find that delicate balance between commercial hip-hop and gritty pop-rock. Recorded with Geoff Rockwell (Memphis May Fire, Crown The Empire, Forever The Sickest Kids) at Wax Studio, ‘What A Waste’ is an intriguing, well-layered and melodic single. A “work in progress” since November 2017, the track has undergone several alterations while The XO honed their sound – what an amazing result!

Touching on personal challenges, ‘What A Waste’ is an honest, sincere and heartfelt track carrying an element of relatability for listeners. While the melodic combination of synth-based beats and dynamic guitars does capture the soul, it is Harris’ vocals that embolden the painful poignancy of the song. Melodic and harmonious, ‘What A Waste’ is a representation of The XO’s innovativeness, versatility and originality.
