Track of the Day: The Tinkermen – Dragging Me Down

The formation of The Tinkermen is a rather sentimental one. Initially planned as a reunion of band members from an old high school band, the five members came together to play some old tracks for fun; little did they know this hobby would turn into something outstanding. After recruiting Dan Mills (drums), Jordan Edge (bass) and Mike Willmott (vocals and guitar), Ryan Archibald (vocals and guitar) and Dom Scadddan (lead guitar) started breeding their own form of alternative rock. While only formed in 2020, the band is relatively new; however, this has not stopped the Isle of Man-based group from making waves on the scene. We chose their single ‘Dragging Me Down’ as our introduction to The Tinkermen.

Recorded at Ballagroove Studios with Gyp Buggane, ‘Dragging Me Down’ is a high-paced, emotive and engaging song. Combining powerful guitars with pounding drums and Archibald’s gruff vocals, ‘Dragging Me Down’ is reminiscent of Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, Catfish and The Bottleman and Red Hot Chili Peppers. While the typical tone of the melody is comparable to alternative rock bands, there is an underlying indie-rock/grunge influence reminiscent of The Strokes and Nirvana. This diversity of genres in a single song showcase the group’s experience and innovativeness.

While the melody is enough to get you jumping about with complete abandon, Archibald’s vocals add the little something extra for me. The clarity and elegance of execution is evident of a confident, experienced and assertive vocalist. Effortlessly flowing into the powerful instrumentation, Archibald’s dynamic tone and timbre illustrate both a brusque roughness but also a warm richness. It’s a forceful combination that is totally captivating, hypnotic and insatiable.
