Track of the Day: The Old Revival – When This Thing Ends

Developing from a mere collection of songs by Brandon Prinzing, The Old Revival is a five-person band with some albums and singles to their name. Evolving from the blues-inspired debut album Hear This to the rock-influenced 9 Meals From Anarchy, The Old Revival has a boundary-breaking style and sound. Featured on iHeart Radio and Edgar Allen Poets (to name a couple of publications), the Oregon-based quintet is sharing their music on an international scale. We introduce you to the band with their single ‘When This Thing Ends’.

As part of their 2020 album 9 Meals from Anarchy, ‘When This Thing Ends’ is a fusion of alternative rock with indie-rock undertones. Recorded by Dayne Wood at The Firing Room, the single is a beautifully layered combination of dynamic instrumentation and fiery vocals. What I find particularly intriguing about ‘When This Thing Ends’ is the prominence of each element while also flowing into a harmonic melody.

For fans of Kids In Glass Houses, Mayday Parade, Thirty Seconds To Mars and All Time Low, The Old Revival have a bold sound. Another thing I find intriguing about ‘When This Thing Ends’ is not the sentimental lyricism or Prinzing’s elegant execution. It is not the combination of pounding drums, soothing piano and guitar work. It is the incorporation of different musical styles within a four-minute track belying the significant content.

Effortlessly fusing contemporary rock-inspired sounds within a classical framework, ‘When This Thing Ends’ engages with audiences of all sizes, shapes and ages. Rounding it off with Jared Leto meets Alex Gaskarth vocals, The Old Revival is set to be an international sensation. It sounds corny, but the US-based group is passionately reviving the core of rock music.
