Track of the Day: The Lunar Keys – Bleed (2024)

We might not have been among the first to discover The Lunar Keys with their 2020 debut single ‘Dance With Me’; but we hopped on the bandwagon in 2021 with ‘Silent Ricochet’ and continue on this journey as devoted fans. From ‘Silent Ricochet’ to 2023’s ’88 Train’, The Lunar Keys bring a wealth of harmonic contrasts to our ears with each melody. Not only does the UK-based foursome offer people a melting pot of music, but they use their music to assist charitable causes. ‘Silent Ricochet’ aided the planting of 900 trees (and counting), while ‘Oxygen Type’ raised funds for Nordoff Robbins, and ‘Maniac’ funded nurses at The Royal Surrey Hospital. The Lunar Keys continue their charity-giving music with the new single ‘Bleed’.

Aptly named, ‘Bleed’, The Lunar Keys pledge to donate £1 to The Haemophilia Society for each of the first 250 reviews or airplay – I do hope we’re one of them. Moreover, the single goes beyond charity to make listeners’ hearts bleed (not physically) and tear ducts tingle. Recorded and mastered with Billy Foster and mastering by James Trevascus, ‘Bleed’ retains the alternative rock meets pop-rock sound of ’88 Train’ but brings a heavier depth to the alternative rock with indie-rock clinging to the sonic wrapper. Interestingly, the lick of 90s rock weaves with contemporary tunes, so you have something familiar with refreshing new-ness.

Unlike previous material filled with explosive energy, ‘Bleed’ is explosive without being “filled with nervous energy”. Steve’s soaring guitar matches Dom’s pounding drums with JC’s bold bass slithering through the melody. For me, however, it is the prominent inclusion of Lexi’s keyboard that brings an edgy soothing to a powerful tune. Then again, JC’s vocals up the ante in rich and warm, but simultaneously gruff and vulnerable tones.

‘Bleed’ – really, really aptly named. The melody is breath-taking and soul-stirring running down your spine and through your brain; however, it’s the bleeding heart sapping your body of strength that makes ‘Bleed’ insanely moving. Powerful but fragile, The Lunar Keys once again astound audiences near and far.
