Track of the Day: The Horn – Passion
Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks? Alright, in this case, it might be the veteran artists of The Horn showing us their new tricks. Coming together not too long ago, entertainers from the 70s decided to bring the awesomeness of old-school music to modern-day audiences. With a growing reputation for energetic, engaging performances, The Horn is already building a loyal following. As popular as they are live, the UK-based five-piece is turning heads across the blogosphere featuring in RGM and Glasse Factory (to name a few). Today we gander at their debut single ‘Passion’.
Described as a “kinetic triumph that reflects the confident and cool nature of this time-travelling band”, ‘Passion’ enchants listeners with its hard-hitting style. Combining classic rock with indie-rock sentiments, ‘Passion’ is a nostalgic toss-back in time while retaining a contemporary edginess. Elegantly well-layered, there is a melodic harmony between all instruments; however, the band also offer each element dominance showcasing the natural talent of each member. Pounding drums, dynamic guitars and powerful vocals meld beautifully to hit you in the chest while soothing your soul.
Penned by the talented Nick True (a songwriter and former bassist of 80s rock band Friends with Gavin) when he was 26 years old, ‘Passion’ combines youthful recklessness with the hindsight that age brings. I mean, not that the guy is old or anything, he just has some experience in life. True explains that ‘Passion’ “was all about the roller coaster of life in my 20s. The song always stayed with me and a few years ago I came back to it…it feels special to me because it straddles decades of my life…”
What I find intriguing is how the heavier sounds of ‘Passion’ seem to encapsulate the fieriness of reckless youth, but the sophisticated musicality represents the steadiness of True’s mind. Intimate, sincere and sentimental, this intriguing single easily hypnotises any listener and I absolutely recommend it to anyone.
