Track of the Day: The Heavy North – Lying To Yourself
All the way from Liverpool, The Heavy North is a quintet that plays that funky music all the way to the bank! Infusing blues, funk and rock, Kenny Stuart (vocals and guitar), Jose Ibanez (lead guitar), Andrew Horrocks (bass guitar), Ste Penn (keys/organ) and Mark Rice (drums) are highly innovative and intriguing. Before the Covid-19 outbreak, The Heavy North performed live shows supporting acts like Temples and Cut Glass Kings. They may not be able to perform live right now, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t producing good music. The latest release is ‘Lying To Yourself’.
With its complex combination of different genres, ‘Lying To Yourself’ appeals to various audiences. Stuart’s gruff vocals are complemented by the tight instrumentation of the track, particularly the well-placed guitar riffs. While this song is a toe-tapper and head-banger, lyrically it is significantly introspective. The Heavy North also released an official music video so you have a chance to see the group performing from the comfort of your home.
“‘Lying To Yourself’ is about those people in everyone’s lives who are struggling – either with their own demons and addiction and feel they can’t always be themselves. Those people who can often lose their way and get swept up in the party, whilst keeping those who care about them at a distance. Most of all, it’s a song about telling people that you’re there for them when they need you most.” – Kenny Stuart on ‘Lying To Yourself’
