Track of the Day: The Chase – Wondering

It’s common for kids who are interested in music to form teenage bands, but when the group begins pre-puberty and is still around then it’s very impressive. The Chase is one of these bands. Hailing from Nottingham, England, The Chase was formed when brothers Tyler Heaney (vocals and guitars), Dion Heaney (drums) and Luke Childs (bass) were only 10, 8 and 12 years of age respectively. Building their sound, the Heaney brothers recruited their school friend James Cahill to bring in some bass creating a rather distinct brand of indie-rock.

Skip ahead a few years and we find the UK-based quartet releasing music and being deemed one of the best up and coming bands by various publications. Growing from a band at the local pub gig to playing UK music festivals, renowned venues like Birmingham’s National Indoor Arena and rubbing shoulders with acts like Twisted Wheel and Hoosiers, The Chase are set for stardom. The group has also received airtime from GMTV and Hollyoaks plus a mention from their childhood hero, Liam Gallagher – truly a moment of note!

Following their single ‘Chain Gang’, The Chase has just released their second single of 2020, ‘Wondering’. Moving from their Coldplay-esque sound in 2019, the group embrace the original 90s Britpop vibe with strong integration of synths in their 2020 offerings. Lead vocalist Tyler Heaney sees an evolution of the band into “more of an electronic sound while still maintaining the original Britpop”. This is clearly evident in ‘Wondering’.

Lyrically, ‘Wondering’ is an exploration of escapism in a mundane life with mind-numbing routines. The lyricism is quite a downer, but the wistful ambience felt with the swirling instrumentation makes the track a bit easier to swallow. Add Heaney’s throaty, Nick Cave style vocals and you have a single that is both unsettling and soothing. A bit of a sonic juxtaposition, but The Chase are honing their sound to become something sensational…if not already sensational.

Side note: The Chase released a music video for ‘Wondering’ that can be viewed here.

“I was in lockdown and struggling with it feeling like Groundhog Day. This track was a bit of a therapeutic writing session wanting to actually get back to the normality of daily life.” – Tyler Heaney on ‘Wondering’
