Track of the Day: The Breakdown – Yesterday
Was it fate or mere chance that brought about the rock group The Breakdown? Founded in 2020 when childhood friends reconnected, The Breakdown is a UK-based foursome blending classic rock with indie-rock and tinges of post-punk. Already a regular feature on The Other Side Reviews, we are attuned to the group’s sound; however, they continue to intrigue us with their, well, intriguing sound. Yet, we are not the only ones turning our heads as the band features on notable blogs like Find No Enemy and RGM. One of their more recent releases is the single ‘Yesterday’.
Taken off their debut album Open The Barricades, ‘Yesterday’ is a flashback to the 80s with tinges of indie-rock sprinkled in a post-punk meets new wave melody. Unlike their tracks ‘ALARM!’ and ‘Wishing Well’, ‘Yesterday’ has a strong nostalgic flair with pounding drums, shimmering guitars, soul-soaring strings and tender piano combinations. The thing is, just as ‘Yesterday’ and many of their other songs have that nostalgic flair, there is a contemporary indie-rock meets indie-pop sound – think The Smiths interwoven with Tame Impala. For me, it is this mishmash of familiar old-school and fresh modern-day sounds that add a specific edginess to The Breakdown.
Now, back to ‘Yesterday’.
Dragging you back a few decades, The Breakdown takes you on a journey through a surreal soundscape. The melody has a smoothness to it with a hazy ambience; however, powerful drums and scorching guitars add a sharpness to the flowing arrangement. Mike Connell’s bold vocals also bring a piercing quality to the track – not a melodic piercing, but a heart-piercing quality in the vocal tone. Vulnerability, fragility and melancholic despair radiate from his haunting voice elegantly expressing the theme of the song – a look at uncertainty, rejection and how our past binds us.
Sincere, sentimental and slightly chilling, The Breakdown share a musical masterpiece with ‘Yesterday’.
