Track of the Day: Terry Blade – Won’t Be Around
Described as being “straight from the soul…” (We Write About Music) and having “a sound that is delectable” (TJPL News), singer and composer Terry Blade has an evocative style being shared with the masses. Recently winning the Gold Medal of Award Of Excellence from the Global Music Awards, Blade’s sound is not only acclaimed but award-winning. In an interview with Country Queer, he shared that the “…award meant the world to me because not many organisations are willing to recognise or even celebrate the work of black queer artists…” Come with us as we delve into even more of his emotive and culturally-influenced tunes in ‘Won’t Be Around’.
In the same interview with Country Queer, Terry Blade discussed the personal theme behind his latest track ‘Won’t Be Around’ – “…it is a follow up to the last line in the previous song ‘Come Home’. The line goes “if the bond is worth saving, darling you better come home or I’ll be gone”. ‘Won’t Be Around’ is about me doing exactly what I said I would do…it is about showing independence by outright abandoning a situation that I said I would abandon.” – a significant and admirable theme where one simply does not play about and acts in the way they believe they should. We all try to fit in by hiding our true ideas, but Blade is not one to follow that crowd.
Blending elements of blues, roots and Americana in the melody, ‘Won’t Be Around’ is an eclectic package of sound. While there is a unique contemporary vibe to his music, the new track has a nostalgic flair lying somewhere between B.B. King, Muddy Waters and Ray Charles. Unlike some of his previous work, ‘Won’t Be Around’ is a simplistic single with a sparse melody. The barebones execution not only shows how stripped-back songs can be highly emotional but simultaneously shows the talent of Blade to bring kaleidoscopic tones to a minimalist tune.
Overall, what do I think of Terry Blade? Easy – I am utterly flabbergasted by his natural talent, raw authenticity and boldness. I cannot wait to hear more from the US-based musician.
