Track of the Day: STOUT – Trigger (2024)

Described as the Queen of New Era Rock, singer-songwriter STOUT is a musician that you will hear once and never forget – trust us, we know. This is the first time STOUT has crossed our ears, but her confidence, power and elegance hypnotise listeners into a STOUT state. Along with her enchanting melodies, the US-based artist is a powerful force on the stage. Touring, recording and sharing the stage with artists like Missy Elliot, Stevie Wonder, Carlos Santana, Paul Simon, Alicia Keys, John Mayer, John Legend and Harry Connick Jr, she is truly a head-turner.

Following her rock meets soul cover of Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’, STOUT saunters into 2024 with the single ‘Trigger’. The first song from her upcoming album, ‘Trigger’ reinforces her chameleonic nature moving from rock-filled soul to a jazz-influenced RnB melody. Leaning toward the sounds of Alicia Keys, STOUT brushes ‘Trigger’ with old-school RnB; however, an eclectic jazziness floods the tune picking up on STOUT’s powerhouse vocals.

Soothing, smooth and gentle, ‘Trigger’ is the laidback lift needed after a hard day. The melodic tones of STOUT’s vocals wrap you in a warm embrace and guide you to a calm, comfortable happy place. Charming and relaxing, the melody caresses you pushing away all your cares but a provocative pixie teeters on the edge of this “happy place”. STOUT’s enigmatic charm has you grinning with a hypnotic sheen of hopefulness…then the pixie strikes.

Penned as a love song, the chilled-out tune sees you gliding through a perfumed haze of sound; however, ‘Trigger’ is not the theme song of Disney princesses but rather a Romeo and Juliet soundtrack. A relatable tune about romance and heartache, the single is “a soulful song about love and what happens when it doesn’t go the way you hoped it would…” I find this particularly intriguing as STOUT’s powerhouse vocals open your heart with eagerness but simultaneously has the burning yearning to soothe your tears while you sob about a lost affair.
