Track of the Day: Stefan West – Hard Times (2024)

Singer-songwriter Stefan West may be known for his energetic, eclectic and enthusiastic indie-rock melodies; however, the depth of his music goes much deeper than a catchy riff. Using poetic lyricism and his natural storytelling skills, his songs connect with audiences as a means of solace, celebration and comfort. West focuses on authenticity and originality, but most of all connection and relatability. The latest addition to his heartfelt repertoire is the single ‘Hard Times’.

On the heels of his well-received singles ‘All For Nothing’ and ‘paint me how you see me’, Australia-based West rides the waves of complex emotion in ‘Hard Times’. Collaborating once again with producer Chris Gatz and mastered by Joe Cerra, ‘Hard Times’ retains the essence of West’s signature indie-rock sound; but a pitch of magical music dust sprinkles a more diverse rock-tinged tone to the track. Stepping further toward a 90s alternative rock style, ‘Hard Times’ embraces old-school rock vibes with a contemporary indie kicker.

Joined by musician Aaron Schembri, an infectious concoction of pounding drums, soaring guitars, and shimmer of keyboards merge in a kaleidoscopic swirl of rock. To my ear, a slight reminiscence of Dodgy exists; however, West’s distinctive quality burns bright in the melody. One aspect particularly interesting and appealing, beyond the toe-tapping guitar solo, is the use of a trumpet in the track – contributed by West’s father, Mark West. Is it this that brings the bounciness to ‘Hard Times’? All I know is that it oozes joviality, optimism and hope from every chord. Stefan West explains:

“’Hard Times’ was written with my good friend Aaron Schembri. It was born out of wondering what it would be like to be able to appreciate the harder times of our life whilst we are living in them, rather than only being able to see the beauty in hindsight… This song is about seizing the day and recognising that even in our struggles, there is something beautiful about the experience. It’s about trusting that we are exactly where we need to be and acknowledging that the hard times can be the most rewarding…”
