Track of the Day: Smilley – All You’re Gonna Get
If John Mayer were to have a child with Hozier and Paolo Nutini were to raise it, the chances are Smilley would be it. Weaving soft rock tones with a charming indie-rock vibe, this US-based artist has warmth and innocent boldness coming through in his sound. The solo project of multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Miles Platt, Smilley is the “core definition of what it means to be a solo project” producing music independently. Come with us as we dip our toes into his debut single ‘All You’re Gonna Get’.
The first song off his upcoming debut album Stay Well, ‘All You’re Gonna Get’ is a toe-tapping, soul-soaring bundle of warmth. Smooth, soft and enchanting, the melodic arrangement perfectly highlights Platts’ bold vocals, dynamic guitars and pounding drums. Yet, while the melody shows alluring musicality, it is the lyricism that really took my breath away. More complex and intricate than initially presented, the soothing soft rock ballad holds a juxtaposition between charm and vulnerability between the words and melody.
Written as a response to a long, messy and drawn-out breakup, ‘All You’re Gonna Get’ is delicate with an intimate vulnerability. The thing is, just as there is a haunting fragility subtly lingering in the melody, the song is empowering and optimistic. Smilley explains that instead of being overwhelmed by the poignancy of the breakup, he felt “…on top of the world. I really wanted to translate my emotions into a song that not only talked about how I was feeling but also felt like how I was feeling…” – I suppose that is why ‘All You’re Gonna Get’ has you smiling instead of crying.
Sincere, sentimental, sensitive and genuine, Smilley has won my heart with his debut single ‘All You’re Gonna Get’.
