Track of the Day: Skylights – Outlaw
Described by Radio X as “…sounding really good” and producing “…outstanding performances fizzing with energy and conviction…” by The Yorkshire Evening Post, it’s no wonder UK-based Skylights is turning people’s heads With engaging melodies and a bad-ass attitude, the lads infuse Britpop with post-punk to create a unique indie-rock sound. Featured on RGM, York Press, Local Sound Focus, iHeart Radio and more, Skylights are emerging as one of the UK’s most exciting bands.
Two years after their well-received single ‘Darkness Falls’, Skylights are back with ‘Outlaw’. Adopting a sharper, more “in your face” style in the new release, the song moves from alt-rock mellow to an almost punk sound. Reminiscent of Sex Pistols but with a modern-day tinge of Oasis, Skylights mellow out punk brashness in their intriguing arrangement. Distorted guitars meld with pounding drums resulting in a high-pace, energetic, upbeat single that is totally mind-bending.
While the melody can have you jumping about on its own, Rob Scarisbrick’s rich vocals add a hint of warmth to the track. Alright, perhaps warmth isn’t necessarily the best adjective, but Scarisbrick’s tones wrap you in a comfortable blanket as you are tossed into a kaleidoscopic whirlpool. Not discounting the skills of Turnbull Smith (lead guitar), Jonny Scarisbrick (bass) and Myles Soley (drums), of course.
Inspired by the people of Aberdeen, ‘Outlaw’ is a tribute to a football chant but also aligns with current global events. While songs about current events can be provocative and opinionated, Skylights do not attempt political provocation – all they want is an amazing song that will resonate with listeners. Finding the line between The Cult and The Verve, Skylights pierce the soundscape with their infectious song ‘Outlaw’.
In addition to the single, Skylights has released an official music video for ‘Outlaw’. You can view the video below or on their YouTube channel.
