Track of the Day: Silversel – Whiskey Haze (2024)
For over a decade, six gents from the USA (Georgia to be exact) have brought audiences a “swampy hard rock” sound. Originally conceived by Wally Silver (vocals), Justin Myers (guitars) and Ricky Saldano (drums), Silversel began their journey of hard rock raucousness. Joined by Daniel Durden (guitars), Mikey Burress (rhythm guitar) and Stephen Saxon (bass guitar), the group laid out a unique sound quickly capturing the eyes and ears of international audiences. With three well-received albums beneath their belt, and the single ‘Heard It All Before’ reaching the Grammy Award shortlist for ‘Best New Rock Song’ before being beat out by Queens of the Stone Age and Neil Young, Silversel are an established band with a notable reputation.
The first release since their 2021 EP Inexorable, Silversel returns with the 2024 single ‘Whiskey Haze’. The first track from Silversel’s upcoming fourth studio album, ‘Whiskey Haze’ retains the brashness of previous material but has a heavier lean toward classic rock and metal. Recorded and produced by engineer Shane Baldwin, the track combines pounding drums, soaring guitars, and a powerful bass in a gruff twirl of music.
Some music is heard, and some is felt, ‘Whiskey Haze’ is an emotional experience that needs to be felt. As if pushed into a sonic hurricane with demons glimpsing at you with terrifying and enticing grins, Silversel drops you into a melting pot of torment. Drums flutter behind you while guitars lift your face with their kaleidoscopic intensity; however, a beam of light breaks through the hard rock chaos. With raw vocals, Silver holds your hand and navigates the darkness to that hopeful light. Silversel explains:
“‘Whiskey Haze’ is written from a viewpoint of recovery, whatever that may be from. Recovery is a journey, it’s never an overnight endeavour. Sometimes the road is thousands of miles, for some folks it’s shorter. Regardless of the length of the road, we feel that the end is always worth the journey.”
In addition to the single, Silversel released an official lyric video for ‘Whiskey Haze’. You can view the video below or via their YouTube channel. Please note that this video uses lighting effects that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised.
