Track of the Day: Shobsy – ENTERTAINMENT (2024)

This may be our introduction to the Irish singer-songwriter Shobsy, an introduction we’re thrilled about, but he has been turning heads for some time. Since his debut single ‘Vanity’ in 2022, Shobsy has received critical acclaim from global publications, performed at prominent venues, as well as performing on The Late Late Show (you can watch him perform an acoustic cover of Jimmy Somerville’s ‘Smalltown Boy’ here). Just as the artist reaches beyond his Irish borders, his music pushes the boundaries of pop music proving him anything but pedestrian.

As his first release in two years, ‘The Way We Are’ highlighted an evolution in his sound following his critically acclaimed songs ‘Driven’ and ‘Vanity’, but ‘ENTERTAINMENT’ demonstrates greater growth. ‘The Way We Are’ is a sophisticated production, however, Shobsy seems to move from a child to a mature adult with the new track. Difficult to explain, ‘ENTERTAINMENT’ takes one bold step forward in its full-bodied richness, vibrant confidence, and “well, this is me…enjoy” attitude. Drawing on nostalgic disco vibes fluttering through the bold pop tones, ‘ENTERTAINMENT’ is a hint of funk rushing along with insatiable toe-tapping grooves.

A quick listen to Shobsy’s music and you’ll discover his sound is immersive, not a nice song on the radio. A combination of dynamic guitars, plucky keyboards, bold bass, and a horn section bringing up that circus-like boom, ‘ENTERTAINMENT’ places you in a psychedelic whirl of bright colours and a hearty rush of pure joy. Shobsy’s luxurious vocals give you the “get up and dance because it’s fantastic” vibe – Irish charm, it’s really something.

While the melody may be an energetic blast of electric bliss, Shobsy shows profoundness in the contemplative theme. He explains:

“In an age where songs are consumed like popcorn, ‘ENTERTAINMENT’ is a song designed to satisfy and satiate even the most hungry of listeners. The track toys with the idea of how the artist has become the slave of its audience, doing anything and everything in order to entertain…”
