Track of the Day: Shallow Alcove – Blonde Phase

Beginning as a group of college friends writing songs as a hobby, Shallow Alcove began as some of the most successful projects – just some buddies having some fun. Led by Dave Harris and Grace Krichbaum, Shallow Alcove provide “the ultimate soundtrack to the highs and lows of young adulthood” with their intriguing sound. Since releasing their first, well, release, the lads and lady have graduated from college taking their sound to the masses. In fact, Shallow Alcove has performed alongside Charlie Burg and Laura Elliot gaining a loyal fanbase. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Blonde Phase’.

The first track of a three-song narrative, Shallow Alcove are embracing an edgy pop sound with their new music. As I mentioned, the band provides theme songs for young adulthood and ‘Blonde Phase’ is about “romanticising your past without becoming stuck in it”. The nostalgic flair of their elegant lyricism brings those happy times to the fore but also realise there is more to experience in the future.

“Our first song in what seems like forever, this song is about friendship and was born of exactly that…I hope this song makes you dance and also makes you think about the people and places that you love.” – Shallow Alcove on ‘Blonde Phase’

Following their five-track EP Acting Tough, ‘Blonde Phase’ is a more upbeat, up-tempo and hard-hitting song than previous work. This transition from a lighter, folk-tinged sound not only showcases Shallow Alcove’s versatility but their desire to explore different genres. I would say there is a taste of Taylor Swift in the vocals with a hazy dream-pop soundscape, but there is a greater “oomph” to Shallow Alcove’s music – something that is entirely Shallow Alcove.
