Track of the Day: Sara Henya – Pancakes

Inspired by artists such as Sara Bareilles, Grimes, Joanna Newsom and Hannah Diamond, Sara Henya is a soulful singer-songwriter playing, what she calls, “fantasy-pop”. Combining buoyant pop music with the surreal sounds of her harp, Henya breeds a fun, fairy-like sound to match her ethereal character. In 2018, she released her debut EP Small World Alchemy to critical acclaim receiving coverage on radio stations Power Folk, Womenspace and Out of the Woods. Known for her engaging performances, Henya has built a large following on a national level. The latest addition to her discography is ‘Pancakes’.

The follow-up to her single ‘Circles’, ‘Pancakes’ is a moving single, but not in the flowing way of ‘Circles’. While ‘Circles’ has a melodious, harmonic and soothing sound, the new track is far more staccato. Layering her harp with elements of electropop, Henya adopts a spirited sound with a contemporary synth-based beat. While a more modern pop song, ‘Pancakes’ continues to showcase Henya’s otherworldly style and surreal sound.

While there is a contrast between the classical harp and electronic beats, the sounds combine well and complement each other. Henya may have fairy-like vocals, but the skilled production places her simple soprano as a prominent feature in ‘Pancakes’ enhancing the harmoniousness of the track. Lively and eclectic, ‘Pancakes’ showcases Henya’s innovativeness and originality as an artist.
