Track of the Day: Saint Samuel – Yabomm

Despite building his name in the Virginia music scene as Sam McCoig, Saint Samuel is one of the most intriguing emerging acts on the indie music scene. Operating under his new moniker, the US-based producer/singer-songwriter is gaining recognition on an international level. Featured on notable blogs, podcasts and online radio stations, such as iHeart Radio, YMX, Talk About Pop Music and Chalkpit Records, Saint Samuel has the attention of audiences across the globe. Inspired by LANY, The 1975 and COIN, the singer-songwriter has a diverse influence – and this is highly evident in his genre-bending sound. Today we will be speaking about his single ‘Yabomm’.

Alongside his well-received singles ‘Felt Good On My Lips’ and ‘On A Wire’, Saint Samuel traverses alt-rock, 80s pop and indie-pop in ‘Yabomm’. While the instrumentation has a powerful impact, it is the overall simplicity of its arrangement that enhances its beauty. An underlying piano caresses the steady drums and guitar with a smooth harmony; however, it is the crescendo into a dynamic guitar solo that adds an alternative rock element.

Yes, the instrumentation is important in the flow and impact of a song, but it is the vocal aspect that pushes ‘Yabomm’ above the rest. Collaborating with Ceili Galante, Saint Samuel incorporates a female vocal into this ballad. The conversational style enhances not only the interaction between the dulcet tones but also increases the intimacy of the song. Moreover, the Ceili’s soothing soprano adds a lingering intensity and otherworldliness to the track.

Penned a few months ago, ‘Yabomm’ was written to be “something a little more unique than what was already out there”. As with many ballads exposing lost love and longing ‘Yabomm’ has an evocative vibe; however, Saint Samuel and Ceili make it far more intense with an overwhelming sense of yearning. Delicately picking apart the fragility of the human soul, the flowing single finds a balance between heart-wrenching pain and optimistic acceptance.
