Track of the Day: Sabina Chantouria – Echoes (2023)
Eclectic, elegant and entrancing, singer-songwriter Sabina Chantouria has a sound that will leave you completely lost in a swirl of music. While there are only a few singles on her Spotify, this is by no means symbolic of her skill as a musician. In 2011, she was selected for the World Championship of Performing Arts in Hollywood, and in 2017 she performed as the Georgian National finalist at Eurovision. Chantouria has also performed live on radio and television, received features across the globe, and captured hearts along the way.
Following her well-received single ‘Blood On Your Hands’, Georgian-Swedish Chantouria releases ‘Echoes’. A bit of an odd heritage but does nationality really matter when it comes to the joy of music? Interestingly, her velvety vocals show reminiscence to fellow Georgian Katie Melua as does her presence and overall heartfelt demeanour. I am not by any means placing Chantouria in the shade of Melua; in fact, given her tenderness, charm and eclecticism, Chantouria is probably up there with Melua despite her relative newness in the music scene.
Recorded with music producer Dave Jenkins, ‘Echoes’ merges Chatouria’s obscure voice with world-renowned musicians Doug Pettibone, Jorgen Carlsson and Kenny Aronoff. Teetering on the cusp of indie-folk and folk-pop, there is a soft, soothing sensation throughout the melody backed by powerful drums and guitars. Yet, while a forceful arrangement lingers within the encompassing symphony, Chantouria’s moving vocals lead us toward the lighter, brighter and more harmonious side of things.
Just as the melody can hold its own as a powerful piece, it is the poignant lyricism that touches my heart. A nostalgic song traipsing time, memories and lost moments, ‘Echoes’ is really what it says on the label: echoes of life.
