Track of the Day: Roger Ricks – What A Place (2023)

Music has the power to change the world, and no one knows this better than Roger Ricks. Alright, most people understand the power music has to change the world, but something that has Ricks standing out in the crowd is his passion, creativity and determination to make a difference through his melodies. Hailing from Switzerland, multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Ricks attempts to “build bridges between cultures and bring people together” with rock music. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘What A Place’.

A self-taught guitarist, Roger Ricks adopts a DIY approach to music production recording in his home studio with guitars he created himself for a unique tone. Following his single ‘Lost’, Ricks fills our ears with classic rock in ‘What A Place’. Inspired by 80s rock, ‘What A Place’ leans toward the iconic sounds of Aerosmith but still has a slight modern-day hard-rock tinge slivering through the melody. While Roger Ricks is a solo artist, ‘What A Place’ is a collaborative piece. Combining the talent of drummer Chris Brush, the song has a pounding drum beat allowing ‘What A Place’ to capture the essence of Aerosmith.

Along with the heart-pumping, hard-hitting melody, there is a depth seen in Ricks surpassing the intricacy of his arrangements through the song’s lyricism. Following his desire to empower people in today’s society, Ricks explains that ‘What A Place’ is a hopeful song to encourage people to stand together. In fact, all of Roger Ricks’ music supports charity with all proceeds being donated to children in need.

“There are several difficulties in the world at the moment that makes it hard to stay positive all the time. I try to show this everyday struggle but also give some hope and encourage the people to stay together and try to continue the fight.” – Roger Ricks on ‘What A Place’
