Track of the Day: Robbie Rapids – Adolescent Lover

Hailing from Michigan, but now residing in Georgia, Robbie Rapids is a US-based singer-songwriter with an edgy, rock vibe. While his music has been referred to as “jangly pop-rock”, his diversity in influences adds a unique style to the sound. With experience in the music industry, Rapids is already known, but he is also making his way onto the independent scene. Featuring on Indie O Clock, Edgar Allan Poets, Indie Dock Music Blog, Less Than 1000 Followers and various playlists, he is reaching audiences on an international scale. The latest addition to his discography is ‘Adolescent Lover’.

Teaming up with musician David Lavene, Rapids is creating a collection that brings together four decades of rock influence. Recording during the Covid-19 pandemic, Lavene and Rapids embrace remote collaboration making music while miles apart. Following the well-received debut track ‘Who Shot Them Down’, Rapids and Lavene adopt an old-school rock sound wrapped in a contemporary blanket in ‘Adolescent Lover’. Merging elements of 90s alternative rock with some flaunting of jangle pop in the mix, the single is both bopping and soothing in a grungy way.

Inspired by life in its entirety, Robbie Rapids speaks about being in love as a youth with ‘Adolescent Lover’ – the clue is in the name. Touching on the joy, passion, and intimacy of romantic love, the single has a toe-tapping sentimental quality. Yet, on the other side, Rapids also looks at the difficulties of a relationship and the ending of the affair. Rapids explains that ‘Adolescent Lover’ is “about my teenage life growing up. A poem on the back of my pay cheque from the 90s turned into a full song memory…the song starts about my car, girlfriend of a couple of years, issues we had in the relationship…and finally letting me go ‘cause life moved in different directions.”

Genuine, honest and sincere, Rapids and Lavene share the heart-warming tune ‘Adolescent Lover’. Young love never sounded so good.
