Track of the Day: Rob Lea – Freak
Most well-known for his Queen tribute band, UK-based Rob Lea has been performing internationally for almost a decade (give or take) – and picking up a large following on the way. His love for acting and music came together in his tribute band, but when the pandemic hit, he decided to start writing original songs and performing them at his gigs. How did it go down? The crowd loved it! Now we have Rob Lea turning heads as a solo artist, and he’s pretty darn good. The latest addition to his critically acclaimed repertoire is ‘Freak’.
Following his single ‘Summer In The Morning’, ‘Freak’ is Lea’s third track this year (and third on his discography). Adopting a heavy rock and roll vibe in the track, Rob Lea shows his gruffer, rougher and grittier side. Slick guitars blend with pounding drums, synths and even an interspersed trombone in the background – all courtesy of the multi-instrumentalist himself. Groovy vibes slither through the melody with a toe-tapping effect on any listener. The thing is, while the melodic arrangement is outrageously good, it is Lea’s vocals that definitely make the song.
Already a sexy song from start to end in a bold rock way, Rob Lea’s exquisite vocals rush into your brain bringing sensuality to ‘Freak’. Unlike his pop-inspired ‘Summer In The Morning’, there is an edginess to this grungy rock and roll tune. Interestingly enough, while a sliver of sensuality shines through the kaleidoscopic soundscape, ‘Freak’ is not actually about anything sensual at all. Instead, it is an empowering rock song inspiring people to be different and “stick a middle finger up at anyone who says you are less than perfect.” Perhaps that brash confidence is a little sexy?
Powerful, sentimental, brutally honest and genuine, Rob Lea slithers into your brain, rattles about the cranium and sends shivers down your spine with ‘Freak’.
