Track of the Day: Rob Clamp – Adelaide (2023)

From Americana UK to Existential Magazine, Entertainment Focus, Sinusoidal Music, BBC Introducing and FV Music Blog, singer-songwriter Rob Clamp has been entertaining audiences on an international scale for about three years now. This is my introduction to Clamp, but he has been turning heads across the globe with charm, elegance and tenderness reaching audiences in the UK, Australia and mainland Europe. In addition to these gigs, features and airtime, further accolades include winning the Sofia International Singer-Songwriter 2022, Purbeck Rising 2022, and The Twang Factor 3 from Americana UK. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Adelaide’.

Inspired greatly by his travels as an adult, Clamp explains that writing music keeps him grounded as he shares songs of his experiences, people he meets and different cultures. In an interview with Existential Magazine, Clamp shared that ‘Adelaide’ is “…a song I’ve been sitting on for a while…It’s a song I wrote about how life in the city can change overnight if you’re in the wrong part of town; stemming back to my time in Australia…”

Following his well-received five-track EP Aide Memoire, ‘Adelaide’ is a soft, laidback, relaxing folk tune; however, as he mentions above, the tides can turn immediately if you are “in the wrong part of town”. While the soothing charm of Clamp’s dulcet tones brings mellow sentimentality, a gruffness belies the gentle flow of the melody capturing the hidden gruffness of a changing situation. Recorded at Sunrise Sound Studios, Clamp’s tender vocals take you on a dramatic sonic journey in ‘Adelaide’.

One aspect I love about Clamp and his acoustic folk sound is the stripped-back rawness of the songs. He lays all emotions bare in the simplistic songs; however, while a minimalist approach is heard, the organic arrangement is nothing short of kaleidoscopic. Finding a way of twisting innocent naivety into a chilly otherworldliness, Rob Clamp catches your soul and sends you twirling about with ‘Adelaide’.
