Track of the Day: RetroBright – The Edge of Your Dreams (2024)

Already a name on the Los Angeles music scene, all three members of RetroBright have diverse influences, experiences and sounds to meld in their melodic concoctions. Drawing on various flavours of rock, David Santos, Charles Eckstrom and Mike Baber bring an eclectic rock style to the table; however, as contemporary edginess lingers through their music, a nostalgic drag back to the 1990s beats at its core. Taking a fresh but familiar stance on indie-rock, alternative rock, and even some indie-pop, RetroBright is keen to thread the music of yesteryear to today’s emerging scene. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘The Edge of Your Dreams’.

Proving good music can transcend time, space and generations, ‘The Edge of Your Dreams’ has a moving style giving listeners “a fresh take on the indie-rock genre”. Following the well-received debut track ‘Over My Head’, the US-based trio retain the lightness of their 90s rock tone, but a slip of harder 90s alternative rock weaves through the sophomore single. Potentially the younger brother of Bon Jovi with his best friend being U2, RetroBright has a hard-hitting forcefulness to ‘The Edge of Your Dreams’ but with a simpler soothing belying the bold rush of sound.

Weaving soaring guitars with a bold bass and pulsating drums, ‘The Edge of Your Dreams’ is a hard-hitting alternative rock tune. Yet, just as the song is sophisticated with harmonic unity, each instrument shines with individuality as each element adds a delicate flavour to the symphony. Weaving bright reds and shimmering greens with a thread of blue, ‘The Edge of Your Dreams’ is a beautiful sonic tapestry. Then again, just as the instruments contribute to the masterful music, Santos’ vocals bind everything with a golden ribbon.

Appealing to modern-day audiences with its indie-rock meets alternative rock sound, RetroBright finds a unique glean to the old-school rock style. For me, and this is just my opinion, hearing ‘The Edge of Your Dreams’ reminded me of the show Roswell and could easily replace Dido’s ‘Here With Me’ as its theme tune. Pitch perfect, sincere and tender, ‘The Edge of Your Dreams’ is a breath of fresh air, but the lyrics add profound weightiness as “its poetic lyrics highlight that although life is short, love is constant.” I am eager to hear more from the US trio.
