Track of the Day: Raine Stern – So Precarious
With the sensitivity of Jeff Buckley, the boldness of Earth, Wind and Fire, the power of Prince, and the toe-tapping charm of Bruno Mars, singer-songwriter Raine Stern is a force to be reckoned with. Described by Nick Jonas as “one of the most unique and creative performers I’ve seen”, US-based Stern has a sound with old-school funk but modern-day soul. While she is known for her appearance on the talent show The Voice, this talented artist is building an international following among audiences who don’t even know about The Voice. The latest addition to her critically acclaimed discography is her single ‘So Precarious’.
The first release since her single ‘I’m Not Them’ in 2021, Stern blasts into 2023 with her banger of a tune, ‘So Precarious’. As with ‘I’m Not Them’, Stern blends her rich vocals with guitar prowess in this new single. Yet, unlike ‘I’m Not Them’, ‘So Precarious’ brings a real Motown vibe to audiences in its sound. From the groovy horn section to the pounding drums, the melody is a jump back to Earth, Wind and Fire. Add Stern’s rich voice and it’s even more of a smooth, flowing, head-bopping arrangement.
Yet, while the horns, drums and vocals are unforgettable, it is her guitar skills that stand out. Embracing her inner Eric Clapton meets Joe Messina, there is a hypnotic nature to the guitar riffs connecting the catchy chorus with enchanting verses. If I take one thing from ‘So Precarious’, it would be Stern’s intricate guitar work that she performs with such ease.
Songs like ‘So Precarious’ are fun to listen to, but it is the lyricism that adds a certain depth to the track. Contrasting the light-hearted, chilled-out vibes with the intense vulnerability of complex relationship issues. Bearing her soul, Stern tells us about how “…tempting and chaotic it is to fall for someone who puts their art above all else and she is left with the blame when it becomes too much for those who promised to love her.”
Sincere, sentimental, introspective, honest and oozing passion, Raine Stern is rattling about our brains and sending our souls soaring with ‘So Precarious’.
