Track of the Day: Queen Bitch – Fool Out Of Me (2024)

When I listen to Ireland-based band Queen Bitch, it seems odd to think frontwoman Róisin Bohan was anything but confident and bold. Her sophistication and style has one imagining she is a veteran musician; however, timidity, shyness and self-doubt belies the moving melodies. It was only in 2023 that Bohan decided to “finally go after her dreams and put herself out there….” using music as a cathartic catalyst. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Fool Out Of Me’.

Following the well-received single ‘Turn The Lights Down’, ‘Fool Out Of Me’ continues Queen Bitch’s innovative saunter through different genres. While a signature grunge with blues oozes in the new tune, ‘Fool Out Of Me’ ups the ante inserting elements of soul, indie-rock and classic rock into the mix. Gruff and gritty, the track combines Matt Brennan’s bold bass with Al Quiff’s pounding drums in a hard-hitting tune; yet there is a simultaneous clarity emerging in blinding slivers of optimistic light and harmonic symphony.

‘Fool Out Of Me’ follows a grunge-esque distortion making it almost palpably disconcerting – like trudging through a muddy field. It’s downright dirty with scuffmarks on its sonic boots. Interestingly, while Bohan’s insatiable vocals trudge along the field, her voice binds everything in a golden ribbon of optimism, hope and insightful empowerment. She explains:

“’Fool Out Of Me’ is a gritty anthem of resilience; a rock-powered stand against a betrayal by a supposed friend who turned out to be anything but… this track captures the moment you decide to stand your ground, shake off negativity, and reclaim your narrative…. ‘Fool Out Of Me’ celebrates the choice to rise above the noise and let the games of others fall flat, letting go of the need to prove anything to anyone who isn’t worth the time. It’s a song for anyone who’s done with drama and ready to move forward – louder, stronger, and unbothered.”
