Track of the Day: Pullstring – The Only Thing

Inspired by life in its entirety, up-and-coming indie-rock group Pullstring explore the adventures (and misadventures) of being a young adult in the 21st century. Described by notable publications as “invigorating” (Sinusoidal Music), a band that “…keeps you on your toes” (Divide and Conquer) and “…mature and solid” (Edgar Allan Poets), the foursome brings high-quality music not to be ignored. With only one year under their belt, one could call Pullstring a minnow in a sea of musical sharks; however, the US-based group has already garnered a following with their energetic performances and has even opened for the international touring band We Are Scientists.

Making a splash with their debut single ‘Sunday Afternoon’ (released in April 2022), the lads end the year with their debut album All I Know Is What I’ve Seen. Today we take a gander (or rather a listen) to the single ‘The Only Thing’.

As I mentioned, Pullstring uses human experience as a catalyst for their eclectic music. When looking at the theme of ‘The Only Thing’, the band explains that it is “…a bittersweet song – picture yourself starting to drown and you try to grab onto the one thing that makes sense. When March 2020 rolled around, Alex’s life as he knew it was gone and the whole world literally changed in an instant, yet he still tried to hang onto his old life in both personal relationships and the pandemic.”

Using this personal and relatable content, Pullstring brings an intimate connection with audiences to their music. With his dulcet tones, vocalist Alex Fuller oozes a sense of desperation effortlessly touching your heart with a sensitive richness. Interestingly enough, while a sense of starkness exists in the vulnerable lyricism and vocals, ‘The Only Thing’ is a full-bodied ballad leaning toward the sounds of the 90s. Moreover, the boldness of the alt-rock tune seems to hug you in a comfortable sonic embrace.

Sincere, sentimental and introspective, Pullstring explores human vulnerability and fragility in a heart-aching but simultaneously heart-warming way.
