The Other Side Reviewstrack of the day

Track of the Day: Plantoid – Dog’s Life (2023)

Genre-diverse, not to be pigeonholed, versatile, eclectic, obscure – call it what you will, all I know is that Plantoid pushes boundaries with their sound. Hailing from the UK, the foursome has been sharing music with the masses for approximately four years (according to Spotify). Well, technically for two years considering the Covid pandemic’s “hiatus effect” on musicians, but the band was founded in 2019. From the debut three-track Mangö to their single ‘Dog’s Life’, Chloe Spence (vocals and guitar), Thomas Coyne (guitar), Bernardo Larisch (bass) and Louis Bradshaw (drums) have been turning heads with their captivating melodies.

The lead single from their upcoming debut album set for release in 2024 on Bella Union, ‘Dog’s Life’ combines elements of vintage psychedelic rock with a hard rock sensibility. Oscillating from the brighter kaleidoscopic lights of a wistful swirling bubble to the dark, heavy grittiness of a melodic metal pounding, ‘Dog’s Life’ is like slamming back vodkas with the personality-transforming, mind-altering, “I am invincible!” effect.

Guitar-driven from the psychedelic soothing to the rugged brashness, a staccato guitar line punctuates the melody from the get-go. Pounding drums meet the passionate guitar while Spence’s haunting vocals slither through the middle. Similar to the mythological siren, Spence’s voice lifts your spirits with its alluring vivaciousness but draws you to your doom as the mystical tone drops you into a mire of despair. Sublime euphoria flipped to breath-taking ferocity, then back again. Are you prepared for the journey?

In addition to the single, Plantoid released an official music video for ‘Dog’s Life’. You can view the video on their YouTube channel. Please note: this video uses lighting effects that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is strongly advised.
