Track of the Day: Pennan Brae – Zulu

Influenced by old-school rock and roll, Canada-based Pennan Brae brings rock sounds of the 70s to the 21st century. We have already dipped our fingers into Brae’s sonic pool with a review of ‘Weed & Whiskey Women’ (read our review here), but he has numerous well-received releases to his name. Featured on Rising Artists Blog, Pop Fad Blog, Sinusoidal Music, York Calling and Edgar Allan Poets, Pennan Brae is reaching audiences on an international level. One of the more recent additions to his critically acclaimed discography is ’Zulu’.

Following his track ‘Incognito’, ‘Zulu’ is Brae’s first single of 2022. Adopting a strong 1970s rock sound, ‘Zulu’ adds a modern-day edginess to the old-school design. Taken from his upcoming album Picked, the new single is filled with rich, warm and edgy tones. The combination of powerful guitars, husky vocals and pounding drums tips you into a musical whirlpool as you watch a plethora of colours float by. Guitar solos are interspersed throughout the song with dynamic riffs flowing into catchy verses.

The seemingly light-hearted vocal execution is potentially the most evocative aspect of ‘Zulu’. Exploring feelings of anxiety and vulnerability, Brae reaches out into the soundscape with intense intimacy. Confusion can be heard throughout the track with Pennan Brae’s vocals picking up speed to enhance the overwhelming emotions in ‘Zulu’. For instance, lyrics include “oh, I lose my head and don’t know what to do. Quickly spin around but I just don’t have a clue” – if that’s not some lost and confused fragility then I don’t know what is.

In addition to the single, Pennan Brae released an official lyrics video for ‘Zulu’. You can view the video below or on Brae’s official YouTube Channel.
