Track of the Day: Only Sun – Thinking of You

As we hurtle towards summer and things begin to open up again after repeated Covid lockdowns, we are all searching for the anthemic summer tunes that will have us singing in the sunshine. In ‘Thinking of You’, Only Sun, an indie-pop four-piece from High Wycombe, may have hit upon the magic formula. The song opens quietly but quickly ramps up into a high energy verse with elements of 80s hits from Tears for Fears or Talk Talk in the driving keyboard and vocals. There is definitely an echo of the catchiness of ‘Everybody Wants To Rule The World’, which can only be a good thing.

The lyrics alternate between the positive (we’ll be happy when the stars are aligned) and the more doubtful (I don’t believe it). The chorus then raises the bar into something that you can imagine festival revellers singing along to when and if normal life returns. A brief instrumental break is slightly darker chiming in with the less optimistic tone of the lyrics but the song lifts again into a final chorus which repeats with a swell of additional vocals and keyboards. The song then ends on a wistful note, nicely bookending the anthemic tune in between.

A tale of reminiscing over old relationships and in many ways struggling to get over someone, the single packs a relatable punch over gorgeously layered instrumentals and huge vocal harmonies. The upbeat tune offers a contrast to the reflective lyrics, making a winning combination that should guarantee airplay and a positive reception when played live. ‘Thinking of You’ is taken from Only Sun’s debut album Tangled Mind which is due out in the next few weeks and listeners will be hoping for more of the same from the quartet when the new record becomes available.

This summer will also see Only Sun head out on a UK and European headline tour in support of the record with dates in Paris, London, Dunfermline, Leeds and more. Expect ‘Thinking of You’ to be an essential part of the setlist at all of those gigs. Catch them live if you can and let’s hear you singing along.
