Track of the Day: One Nine Eight – Messed Up Feeling (2023)

Technically, One Nine Eight began as a backing band for frontman Harrison Gray, but when the foursome noticed the raw chemistry between them it was clear One Nine Eight needed to exist as an official group. With pure animal magnetism and infectious melodies, the high school friends started establishing themselves as a fan-favourite on the Scottish music scene. Known for energetic, enthusiastic, almost mind-numbing performances (but in a good way), One Nine Eight is unmatched as a live band. I’m not here to speak about their gigs, rather I’m taking us on a journey through the Scottish group’s discography.

Formed in mid-2022, One Nine Eight can be considered a new band with their vibrant style and sound placing them on the tips of people’s tongues. With coverage from BBC Introducing, Amazing Radio and BBC Radio 1, the lads are reaching beyond their Scottish borders with their well-received singles, and we’re taking a gander at the latest song ‘Messed Up Feeling’.

Following their singles ‘See Your Ghost’ and ‘Get It On’, the lads drag us back to the 90s in ‘Messed Up Feeling’. Tapping into their inner Foo Fighters and Good Charlotte, the single is infectious with rock-infused power flowing in the melody. Combining James Kealy’s pounding drums with Charlie Beaton’s scorching guitar and Julian Lyon’s bold bass, the sound is forceful, hard-hitting and gut-wrenching. Interestingly, while a harmonious flow binds the instruments, each element stands out forcing people to pay attention before coming together in a united whole.

Soul-stirring, the melody traps listeners in a kaleidoscopic whirlpool of sound; however, it is Harrison Gray’s vocals that bring obscurity to the intensity of ‘Messed Up Feeling’. With punk-inspired brashness, Gray commands the single in an insistent, vivacious way.

Both a tribute and revival of the 90s pop-rock style, One Nine Eight are loud, raw and ooze passion. The lads may be tearing up Scotland’s scene at the moment, but I doubt it will be long before they reach the rest of the UK and beyond.
