Track of the Day: One Flew Over – The You Show (2024)

Oscillating from the bright and dark sides of reality, Irish duo One Flew Over emerge from tragic mires, blinding lights and hopeful tunnels with soaring guitars, pounding drums, and a charming grin on their faces. Hailing from County Meath, vocalist Irene Ni Chuinn and multi-instrumentalist Martin Quinn saunter through various genres with an “anything but pedestrian” flair. Soulful blues matches indie rock with hard rock clinging to the sides, One Flew Over appeal to audiences from different eras, ages, preferences and…well, just everyone. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘The You Show’.

Following the well-received singles ‘Last Man Standing’ and ‘Not Good For Me’, ‘The You Show’ breathes life into nostalgic sounds of 90s and 2000s soul, blues and alternative rock. More gentle that ‘Last Man Standing’, ‘The You Show’ is laidback, chilled out and brimming with a soul-soothing rush of kaleidoscopic sound. Interestingly, just as the song has harmonic union on its instrumentation, it is gritty and gruff while simultaneously mature and sophisticated.

A musical masterpiece, producer Martin Quinn sprinkles his enigmatic magic across ‘The You Show’, but I find Chuinn’s vocals ups the ante. In her distinctive soulful, bluesy, jazzy tone, she wriggles into your ears, rocks about your cranium and sends shivers down your spine. Moreover, a duality lingers in her voice as vulnerability lies in confidence – a delicate fusion of fragility and roaring empowerment. The sixth single from One Flew Over, ‘The You Show’ is a vivid representation of “an exhilarating journey from discovery to triumph…”

So, what do I think about ‘The You Show’? Sincere and sentimental, introspective and insightful, a brutally honest theme song for those on a journey of self-discovery. Perhaps I’m a little biased being a fan of One Flew Over, but listening to ‘The You Show’ encapsulates the troubled, conflicting but thrilling path to enlightenment as the pair take your hand and show you the way. I cannot wait for more from One Flew Over.
