Track of the Day: Oli Morris – Flyer
Compared to the likes of Bob Reynolds, Chris Cheek and Shabaka Hutchings, UK-based saxophonist Oli Morris has an obscurity but retains familiarity in his sound. Born and raised in California, Morris spent his early childhood in the USA, but he studied music at the University of Chichester. From there on, he embarked on an exciting and eventful musical journey touring Europe, performing at notable music festivals, and becoming a firm favourite on the Bristol music scene. The latest addition to his discography is ‘Flyer’.
Despite having extensive experience as a performer gaining a reputation for powerful gigs, it is only recently that Morris started streaming singles on Spotify. Following his well-received debut ‘Bimal’ (read our review here), ‘Flyer’ weaves funk with soul in its powerful melody. Reminding me greatly of George Benson with a funk-inspired guitar underlying the hard-hitting saxophone, ‘Flyer’ is a swing back to the hey-day of funk-rock.
Growing up listening to George Benson, Chicago and Earth, Wind and Fire, I am always partial to old-school funk sounds, particularly the saxophone. Unlike ‘Bimal’, ‘Flyer’ is entirely instrumental which can appear dull to those who are eager for a Sade vocal execution. Yet, the saxophone takes you on an eventful journey within a kaleidoscopic soundscape. The highs and lows are elegantly placed but have a rustic sensuality that keeps you holding your breath throughout the song.
Described as a “…labour of love” by Bristol 24/7, Oli Morris showed his passion for music in ‘Bimal’; however, it is ‘Flyer’ that highlights his true artistry as a musician. Nostalgic, charming and soul-stirring, Morris intoxicates listeners with his haunting ‘Flyer’. Whimsical but unrelenting, laidback but forceful, ‘Flyer’ is a slow burner that sticks in your head long after the song has ended. Personally, I love it and cannot wait for more from this talented artist.
