Track of the Day: Natasha Ghosh – Paradise
She may have begun performing as a ukulele-ist (is this a word?), but Natasha Ghosh has quickly progressed to producing lo-fi meets electronic beats. While she may have changed genres, Ghosh has not changed anything about her conceptual approach to music. Retaining an emotive, engaging and charming style, we find her picking at synth-based hip-hop beats instead of an organic string instrument. Featured on Mystic Sons and Less Than 1000 Followers, to name but a few, Ghosh is reaching listeners on an international scale. One of the first singles on her well-received discography is ‘Paradise’.
Not being a fan of synth-based pop songs, I was slightly apprehensive when completing this review; however, Ghosh quickly quelled any concerns I might have had with her rich, languid and intoxicating single. Collaborating with renowned lo-fi producer Kid Kio, ‘Paradise’ is well-arranged with beautiful textures and layers. Driven by synths with an underlying hip-hop beat, ‘Paradise’ has a wistful sophistication with a hazy ambience carrying you off on a perfumed cloud of sound.
Sonically, ‘Paradise’ is easy on the ears with a steady flow to the melody; however, it is the vocals that add extra warmth to the track. Touching on romance, desire and the power of love, the single has a heartfelt depth to the provocative lyrics. Using a personal narrative, Ghosh wears her heart on her sleeve in ‘Paradise’. The intimacy of the lyricism is enhanced by the conversational style, so you seem to be hearing her unspoken thoughts in the sincere material. Penned with her girlfriend in mind, it makes sense that the vocals enhance sentimentality, hopefulness and overwhelming yearning.
The result of remote collaboration, Netherlands-based Ghosh shows that you do not need to be in the same room with your producer to create something fantastic. Her dulcet tones are superbly matched by Kid Kio’s synths resulting in a song that is, well, paradise.
