Track of the Day: Movie Club – Black Flamingo
Not one for instrumental groups, I was apprehensive when taking on Movie Club ‘s ‘Black Flamingo’, but I am so glad I did. Hailing from Venice Beach, California, the instrumental rock duo have a unique and refreshing sound. Since their inception in late-2018, Vince Cuneo (guitar) and Jessamyn Violet (drums) have released three EPs, one full-length album and some singles – all critically acclaimed I might add. Not only that, they have supported Robbie Krieger (The Doors) and featured on Rolling Stone, Louder Than War, FV Music Blog and many other publications. May I introduce this duo to you with their single ‘Black Flamingo’
The title song from their debut album (released in late-2020), ‘Black Flamingo’ is a cinematic soundscape for the gothic side in all of us. While the track begins with a rather steady harmonising of drums and guitar, the crescendos within the track add a powerful crash amidst a delicate rock melody. The combination of guitars and drums duly form a hazy ambience, but it is Jessy Greene’s violin that adds the spine-tingling element to ‘Black Flamingo’.
Lying somewhere between noir music and the glorious grittiness of classical prog-rock (if there is such a thing), Movie Club is carving a niche that is genre-defying. When I first imagined a female drummer with a male guitarist, I thought of the White Stripes. Movie Club proved to be far beyond White Stripes in intensity, innovation and addictiveness.
