Track of the Day: Miranda Faul – Renegade (2023)

If Tom Odell and Dido were to have a lovechild, the chances are great it would be singer-songwriter Miranda Faul. Hailing from Ireland, Miranda Faul touches on profound topics with poetic, thought-provoking lyricism wrapped in unique melodies. Known for engaging performances, Faul is quickly garnering a loyal following with shows at venues like The Opium Rooms and The Grand Social. Yet, while it is Dublin benefiting from her charming presence, Faul is reaching audiences beyond her Irish borders. Features on She Makes Music, Hot Press, Unrecorded, Listen To Discover and iHeart Radio.

With only three singles under her belt (at least, according to Spotify), this songstress can be considered a newbie; however, her sound is anything but average. Her acoustic-inspired singles have a vulnerable haunting that gets underneath your skin and leaves you tingling – and I’m not just talking about her latest single ‘Renegade’. Following ‘Can’t Get No Break From The Blues’ and ‘Rise Above It’, Faul proves she can make stripped-back styles kaleidoscopic with a heart-breaking but laidback vibe.

Recorded and produced with Michael Richards and Rossa Healy, ‘Renegade’ is an elegant layering of acoustic guitar with interspersed piano. Soft, soothing and gentle, there is a smoothness to ‘Renegade’ embracing you in a sonic hug. Yet, while there is a warmth to the track, a strange chill slithers through the melody. Perhaps it is Faul’s unique vocals with slight tremors during the chorus or that whisper of melancholy. Then again, atop that, ‘Renegade’ is not a song of misery or despair but an empowering, optimistic and hopeful one.

“’Renegade’ is an indie-folk/pop song about alienation and loss of meaning in the modern world. I wrote it for myself and for my friends who I saw struggling. I wanted to set their suffering within the bigger context of a fast-paced, rapidly changing world where community and continuity are fading. Ultimately, ‘Renegade’ is uplifting, promising that the way home is always within your reach if you look within.” – Miranda Faul on ‘Renegade’
