Track of the Day: Mackenzie Day – Madeline
You really have to impress instantly if you want to make it on today’s crowded pop scene, particularly if you are at an age of 21, like Mackenzie Day. Actually, it was probably even harder for her because she started out in 2019 just getting out of her teens. Here she is now with her most recent single ‘Madeline’.
If it is hard to prove yourself instantly, and if Day is not a household name yet, one thing might indicate she is on the right track – she’s currently a Songwriting major at Berklee College of Music. The talent and skills she’s gathering she uses on her latest release. Why? Well, Day obviously has an open ear at what is going on in modern pop these days using the elements of modern production to showcase both her songwriting skills and the quality of her singing voice. But, then, how do you relate to your audience? For ‘Madeline’, Day picks a theme a lot of potential listeners her age and those in their teens can relate too. For some older ones, it might bring memories they may wish both to forget and remember.
“I wrote this song over the summer when I realized my high school friends were not the people for me anymore. After much growth within myself and my worth I came to discover friendships can also be toxic. Rupi Kaur has this quote: “abuse doesn’t just happen in romantic relationships, abuse can live in friendships too”… ‘Madeline’ was an honest realisation with myself and finally letting go of those friends.” – Mackenzie Day on ‘Madeline’
Musically, though, there’s nothing unpleasant about ‘Madeline’. It does really require talent to combine sensitive themes with some interesting, modern pop.
