Track of the Day: Luna Keller – Invisible Wars (2023)
Many artists leave powerful impressions on our team, but Luna Keller is one of those who is entirely unforgettable. Known for her moving melodies and tender lyricism, the German singer-songwriter captures the intricacy of life experience in every single song. As a “travelling hippie”, Keller is rarely in a single place for long and it is these experiences that inform her intimate singles. With ‘Home In My Heart’ she explored the complexity of long-distance friendships. In her collaborative single with Cloud And Thorns, ‘Live It All’, she piqued our interest with rebellious indie-folk exploring hopefulness and ambition. Known for her moving melodies, Luna Keller simultaneously has a reputation for using these melodies to explore mental health conditions. Taken from her highly anticipated album Ocean Inside Of Me, ‘Invisible Wars’ delves into her personal experience with depression tapping on the inner demons hidden beneath the surface. Keller explains:
“’Invisible Wars’ expresses the loneliness and frustration of struggling with a disease you can’t see… When I wrote this song, I was in a really bad place while still managing to be more or less high-functioning. There’s this fight inside oneself that happens every day that is invisible to those around you. You keep holding on and tell yourself you can be strong for everyone when, in truth, you need help and support.”
Following her well-received single ‘Ocean Inside Of Me’, the title track from the upcoming album, Keller brings a heavier, darker intensity to her signature folk-pop sound. Filled with the vulnerable charm of Janis Ian with the boldness of Florence Welch, ‘Invisible Wars’ fuses old-school folk with contemporary indie-pop. Listening to ‘Invisible Wars’, I felt as if I were falling into a desperate mire of despair; tossed from pillar to post, the kaleidoscopic doom saps my strength and leaves me hollow. Yet, while the single captures the tragedy of hidden depression, Keller’s vocals combined with warming guitars and a sliver of strings create a cathartic optimism where you scream your pain to discover comfort.
