Track of the Day: Lucie Hill – Holding The Space (2024)
Known for her emotional lyricism and moving melodies, singer-songwriter Lucie Hill holds your hand as you sit together talking about the intricacies of life over a warm cup of tea and chocolate biscuits. This is my introduction to the UK-based musician; however, only a few moments in, I feel as if she has been part of my life since day one. Before the gap year for an optimistic twenty-something in New Zealand, Hill was a “closet bedroom composer” in the 2000s; however, the gap year turned into five years carving a name as a promising folk musician. Over the past 15 years, Hill has earned international acclaim with her award-winning music. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Holding The Space’.
Amusing fact: Lucie Hill has, to date, worked with producers named Ben. No jokes, every producer was a Ben. Recorded with Ben King, who also performs the bass and lead guitar on ‘Holding The Space’, this new track is a melding of folk and synth-pop wrapped in a dream-pop haze. Interestingly, while this heady mixture of guitars and fuzzy bass fogs your brain with perfumed intoxication, Hill’s anchor is her simplistic folk style. A powerful ballad of piano and Hill’s dreamy vocals shine as a sliver thread holding you close, giving you guidance and ensuring you make it through with optimistic empowerment.
Training as a psychotherapist using songwriting and music to help others, Lucie Hill “helps others unleash their inner voice…” The intriguing aspect of ‘Holding The Space’ is that it works on both sides of the therapeutic coin. On one hand, Hill captures music as help for others; however, ‘Holding The Space’ also tackles her personal relationship with music finding her own solace in the melodies. Like I said, it’s a conversation between two people sharing ideas, emotions and feeling a sense of much-needed understanding.
