Track of the Day: Lleow – Sacrifice (2024)
Proving that you don’t need to have everything sorted by 40, singer-songwriter Lleow breaks out to begin a musical career in her early 40s – a courageous feat given the societal expectations of people nowadays. When you hit even your mid-30s, people are meant to question their success in life, if they’ve hit all those “milestones”. Do you have a home, kids, successful career? Is the promotion around the corner and what have you accomplished? Using a new brand of music, she refers to as “rebound rock”, Lleow glares ahead with a cheeky grin and bad-ass sassiness remaining true to herself instead of fitting the mould.
Earlier this year, Austria-based Lleow released her critically acclaimed debut single ‘1995’, and she follows it with the powerful new track ‘Sacrifice’. Dragging listeners back to the good ol’ days of 90s grunge, Lleow taps her hat at Nirvana and Radiohead in ‘1995’, and she retains the nostalgic blast of grunge in ‘Sacrifice’. Yet, while a similar sound is heard from each track both are equally different.
Offering a milder sense of distortion and discomfort, ‘Sacrifice’ finds a harmonic balance between the crashing drums and soaring guitar. While a hard-hitting soothing exudes from the energetic single, obscurity exudes from Lleow’s vocals. Reminiscent of Hole’s Courtney Love with tinges of The Dresden Dolls’ Amanda Palmer, her voice is a bold declaration of individuality. I find this appealing as she seems to remove the shackles of societal norms with a gritty shout; however, it simultaneously hugs you close with intimate understanding. Lleow explains:
“…this energetic grunge-style song is about the process of breaking free from the conventional roles of woman, mother, wife and successful professional. The obstacles, the pain and the sacrifices that come with it, especially when you are responsible for other people. A song for anyone at a crossroads in their life…”
In addition to her single, Lleow released an official music video for ‘Sacrifice’. This video can be viewed below or via her YouTube channel. Please note that the music video uses lighting effects that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised.
